The Pioneer Trail at East Hereford Thomas Van Dyke

THOMAS VAN DYKE
1851-1914

The forest and the lumber business held no secrets from Thomas Van Dyke. Originally from New Hampshire, this forestry entrepreneur, supervised a business owned by his brother George. While the latter remained on the American side of the border, Mr. Van Dyke moved to East Hereford. A very colourful businessman, he actively participated in the development of the village by hiring forest workers and loggers whose income was mostly taken back across the border. As a result, Thomas Van Dyke founded a ‘cross-border’ tradition which is active to this day, namely the Christmas tree business.

Go to the center of the village of East Hereford. On Rue de l’Église, across from the church, Thomas Van Dyke will tell you how to hire a Catholic work force when you are a Protestant. It’s worth the detour! Leave yourself plenty of time, as near the church, there is a fir tree interpretation center open every day of the week.
