The Pioneer Trail at Coaticook Lauréat Lavoie
LAURÉAT LAVOIE
1890-1971
Mr. Lavoie, whose father started out as a sailor before becoming a farmer, initially studied forest engineering at Laval University. He then pursued his career at Rivière-du-Loup. In 1940, to establish his sons, he bought the Baldwin Farm from Léon Denis Dérin, owner of the general store and a creamery in Coaticook. It was not long before he entrusted the farm work to his sons Jacques and Bernard and devoted his time to planting some 500 apple trees. He also took part in municipal matters including the conservation of the electricity network under the Municipality of Coaticook in the 1960s. Renamed the Ferme du Plateau by Mr. Lavoie, the estate would remain in the possession of Bernard until 1989, when it became the agriculture information centre it is today.
