The Pioneer Trail at Coaticook Arthur O. Norton

ARTHUR O. NORTON
1845-1919

A native of Kingscroft (a hamlet in what is now the municipality of Barnston West), Arthur Norton forged his career during the construction of the Coaticook Railway making lifting jacks to help with train repairs. He was descended from a long line of builders and was not the first Norton to be known for his hard work. His great-grandfather was the founder of the first mill on the Coaticook River and his father owned a general store and became Coaticook’s first fire inspector. Arthur Norton married Helen Richardson, with whom he had a daughter and a son who actively pursued the philanthropic work their father had begun in the realms of education, health and the arts. In 1913, Arthur Norton had a large home built for himself at the age of 68. Today, it houses the Beaulne Museum www.museebeaulne.qc.ca
