The Pioneer Trail at Coaticook (Barnston) Nathaniel Jenks

NATHANIEL JENKS
1818-1891

This country doctor was 28 years old when he arrived in Vermont in 1846. Dr. Jenks was a devoted physician and frequently visited patients in spite of difficult travel conditions. He was also a key figure in the development of Barnston Corner. Convinced of the need to offer better education to young people, he took part in a campaign launched by Baptist pastor Green to build the first Academy in the township of Barnston. He was also a part-time farmer and played an important role in building Valley Road, today Route 141, in addition to being the mayor of Barnston Township for a term.

The voices of yesteryear at the heart of our landscapes

FIND OUT MORE …

Dr. Jenks can be found at 1169 Chemin de Baldwin Mills, near the small Baptist church. Take the time to admire this historical gem considered ‘an essential site’ by the Conseil québécois du patrimoine religieux. For years, the Barnston Heritage Committee has been sustaining efforts to save and restore the building. Take a few minutes to explore the area as you walk towards a general store that has survived over 160 years. The store is one of the few buildings in the region to have a loggia (small balcony). Visit the two cemeteries located side by side on the other side of the street. As you do, you’ll enjoy a wonderful view of the countryside. Take the virtual tour of the Barston cemetery for a glimpse:

The structure representing Dr. Jenks can be found near the Townships Trail crossing over Route 141. The detour is well worthwhile!
