The Pioneer Trail at Waterville George Gale

GEORGE GALE
1824-1892

Originally from Vermont, George Gale arrived in Stanstead with his family in 1830. He started out as a farmer, but soon showed remarkable talent in engineering and working with his hands. After having built bridges and managed a number of mills, he founded George Gale & Sons in the early 1880s and established his two sons in the company. The factory, on the banks of the Coaticook River in Waterville, operated at full speed, producing springs and brass bedsteads. In expanding this successful enterprise, George’s eldest son Aldebert, opened a second factory in England. George Gale made an important contribution to the industrial growth of his municipality, whose economy still today rests on the many thriving businesses established in the community.
