MATTHEW HENRY COCHRANE
1823-1903
Born and buried in Compton, Matthew Henry Cochrane had many different interests and was active in a variety of places. His main pursuit in life was surely his involvement in the business world.
In partnership with Samuel Smith of Compton, he began the fabrication of shoes in Montreal after receiving his craftsmanship training in the United States. However, it is in the fertile lands of Compton that he fulfilled his dream of raising purebred animals and trading with the United States and England.
He also owned an immense ranch in Alberta and, thanks to his contacts in the political world, he was even appointed to the Canadian Senate.
