WALTER G. BELKNAP
1864-1940
In the early 1880s, Walter Belknap’s family moved from New Hampshire to Barnston. From a very young age, Walter learned from his father how to be an excellent carpenter. By 1890, he had established his own business. He was responsible for the construction of many buildings around Lake Lyster One building of note is the United Church on Chemin May. However, the work of which Walter was most proud was Le Pinnacle Belle, a 40-passenger steamer. Together with Willis Baldwin, he was very active in the development of the Baldwin Fish Hatchery,. Walter and his wife Bertha Annis devoted almost 40 years to this enterprise. In the 1920s it was known as the most productive fish breeding establishment in the country.

Take the Baldwin-Barnston Road, towards Mount Pinnacle. Turn onto chemin des Chalets which leads to the municipal beach. Here Mr. Belknap will give you the lowdown on the history of Baldwin Mills, to say nothing of his stock of tall fishing stories, Plan for a few hours in which to enjoy some of the local attractions: the Lakeview Cemetery, the Parc Découverte nature, the Harold F. Baldwin Park, and the trail up Mt. Pinnacle.
